Wolves 0-5 Manchester United: Highlights, Match Report From Sunday

Manchester United have gone four points clear at the top of the Premier League and, for Wolves, the final whistle must have had the effect of smelling salts. They had been dismantled, in every department, and it leaves them at the foot of the table, looking near-certainties for relegation.

On this evidence, it is difficult to see how Wolves can clamber out of the bottom three. Their only mitigation was that they were faced by ruthless opponents and had to play the majority of the match with 10 men after Ronald Zubar's red card but it was self-inflicted damage and there was gaping evidence of a side who have lost their self-belief. United were rampant but, put bluntly, Terry Connor's team were obliging opponents for a side going for a title while looking to unnerve second-placed Manchester City.Javier Hernandez netted twice in the second half, following goals from Jonny Evans, Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck before the break.

The only surprise was man-of-the-match Wayne Rooney failing to get his name on the scoresheet.

United players were queuing up to score from the moment Roland Zubar saw red on 39 minutes for a crazy second yellow — his side already trailing after Evans' first goal for the club. Manchester United extended their lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League to four points after demolishing a hapless Wolves.

Jonny Evans recorded his first United goal, from a corner, before Ronald Zubar saw red for two yellow cards.

That handed the impetus to the visitors with Antonio Valencia scoring on the break and Danny Welbeck tucking in. On a day where football was put into perspective by the tragic events of yesterday’s tie between Tottenham and Bolton, Manchester United held back nothing as they thrashed Wolves 5-0. Fabrice Muamba was announced to be in ‘critical condition’ after collapsing in yesterday’s FA Cup, and this was honoured by both sets of players and supporters with a minute’s applause prior to kick off. Two goals from Javier Hernandez and one apiece for Danny Welbeck, Antonio Valencia and Jonny Evans helped United to victory.
